How long is a CELPIP score valid?

CELPIP results are valid for two years for Canadian immigration. What that means for timing your test — and why IRCC keeps your best score.

⚡ The short version

  • CELPIP results are valid for 2 years from the date they're issued, for IRCC purposes.
  • Your results must still be valid when you submit — time your test so it doesn't expire mid-application.
  • Within the 2-year window, IRCC uses your highest score, not the most recent.

A common planning question — and an important one, because getting the timing wrong can mean re-sitting a test you'd already passed. The short answer: CELPIP results are valid for two years for Canadian immigration.

The two-year rule

For Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), CELPIP results are considered valid for two years from the date they're issued. As long as your results are within that window when it matters, they count toward your application.

Time it so it doesn't expire

The catch is when the two years are measured. Your results generally need to be valid at the point you submit (and your profile should be backed by valid results through the process). So don't take the test too early — if you sit CELPIP long before you're ready to apply, you risk it ageing out and having to redo it. Aim to test when your application is realistically within reach.

IRCC keeps your best score

Here's the reassuring part: within the two-year window, IRCC accepts your highest result — not necessarily the most recent. So if you retake the test and one skill dips, your earlier stronger score still stands. A retake can lift your result but won't lower it.

Plan around the validity

Put the validity at the centre of your timeline: work out roughly when you'll apply, then schedule the test so a fresh, valid result is ready — neither rushed nor expired. From there it's just a matter of being prepared, which a focused study plan and real practice take care of. Start practising free when you're ready to begin.

Validity and application rules can change — always confirm the current details with IRCC for your specific program before you book.
