CELPIP Score Chart: Levels, CLB Conversion & PR
The complete CELPIP score chart — how Levels 1–12 convert to CLB, how each skill is scored, the score you need for PR, plus a free CELPIP-to-CLB calculator.

⚡ The short version
- CELPIP reports a Level (1–12) for each skill, and it maps one-to-one to CLB — a CELPIP 9 is CLB 9.
- For PR you need CLB 7 in every skill to be eligible, and CLB 9 in every skill to max your Express Entry points.
- Your eligibility is set by your lowest skill, not your average — a 9, 9, 9, 6 profile counts as a CLB 6.
If you've searched for a CELPIP score chart, you're really asking one of two things: what does my level mean in CLB? or what score do I actually need? The good news is that CELPIP scoring is simpler than IELTS — there's no conversion math to memorise. Here's the full chart, how each skill is scored, and a calculator to turn your four levels into your real PR eligibility.
The CELPIP score chart: Levels and CLB
CELPIP reports a separate Level from 1 to 12 for each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There's no combined total and no average. The key fact: a CELPIP level converts one-to-one to a CLB level. A CELPIP 9 in Speaking is CLB 9 in Speaking — the same scale Canadian immigration uses.
| CELPIP Level | CLB level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 10, 11, 12 | CLB 10 | Advanced — the top of the Express Entry grid |
| 9 | CLB 9 | Maxes your Express Entry language points |
| 8 | CLB 8 | Strong, comfortable English |
| 7 | CLB 7 | The Express Entry minimum (FSW · CEC TEER 0–1) |
| 6 | CLB 6 | Developing — workable but below the EE minimum |
| 5 | CLB 5 | CEC minimum for TEER 2–3 jobs |
| 4 | CLB 4 | Enough for citizenship (Listening & Speaking) |
| M (and Levels 1–3) | below CLB 4 | Below the immigration range |
A result below the measurable range is reported as M (minimal proficiency) rather than a number. For a deeper walkthrough of each band, see CELPIP levels explained.
CELPIP score → CLB calculator
Pick your level for each skill to see your CLB, your eligibility level (the one immigration reads), and what it qualifies for:
Based on the official CELPIP-General → CLB equivalency (one-to-one; Levels 10–12 count as CLB 10 for Express Entry). Always confirm current requirements with IRCC for your program.
How each skill is scored
CELPIP scores two ways, depending on the skill:
- Reading & Listening are auto-scored. Every correct answer counts, and your number of correct answers converts to a Level from 1 to 12. Paragon (the test maker) doesn't publish the exact raw-score cutoffs, so there's no official "X out of Y = Level 9" table — the winning move is simply to answer as many correctly as you can and never leave a question blank.
- Writing & Speaking are rated on a rubric, scored 1 to 12 across four dimensions: Content & Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability (Writing) or Listenability (Speaking), and Task Fulfilment. Miss what the prompt asked and your Task Fulfilment is capped before the rater even weighs your grammar — see how Writing Task 1 is scored.
What CELPIP score do you need for PR?
This is where the score chart actually matters. The number you need depends on the program — but it's always expressed in CLB, which (per the chart above) is the same number as your CELPIP level.
| Your goal | You need | CELPIP level |
|---|---|---|
| Express Entry — eligible (FSW; CEC TEER 0–1) | CLB 7 in every skill | Level 7+ each |
| Express Entry — maximum language points | CLB 9 in every skill | Level 9+ each |
| Canadian Experience Class — TEER 2–3 jobs | CLB 5 in every skill | Level 5+ each |
| Canadian citizenship (age 18–54) | CLB 4 in Listening & Speaking | Level 4+ (LS) |
Past CLB 9, a higher level doesn't add more core language points — so CLB 9 across all four skills is the efficient target, not chasing a 10, 11 or 12. For the full breakdown by program, see what CELPIP level you need for PR.
Why your lowest score is the only one that counts
Here's the rule most people get wrong: immigration uses your weakest skill, not your average. A profile of 9, 9, 9, 6 counts as a CLB 6 for eligibility — that single 6 is the number the system reads. Three maxed skills don't rescue one weak one. That's why a balanced profile beats a lopsided one, and why the smartest prep is to find your weakest skill and pour your time there. (It's also exactly what our free practice test is built to show you.)
Is there a "CELPIP band score"?
People often search for a CELPIP band score — but "band" is IELTS terminology. IELTS reports bands like 6.0 or 7.5 that you then translate into CLB with a separate chart. CELPIP skips that step: it reports a Level from 1 to 12 that already is your CLB. So if someone asks for your "CELPIP band," they mean your level — and there's no decimals or conversion table to worry about. (More on the two tests: CELPIP vs IELTS.)
How long does a CELPIP score last?
For immigration, CELPIP results are valid for two years from the issue date, and within that window IRCC keeps your highest score per skill — so a retake can lift your weak skill without putting your strong ones at risk. Details: how long a CELPIP score is valid.

Frequently asked questions
What is the CLB for a CELPIP 9?
A CELPIP Level 9 is CLB 9. CELPIP scores map one-to-one to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, so the level you see for each skill is your CLB for that skill. CLB 9 in all four skills earns the maximum Express Entry language points.
Does CELPIP have a band score?
No — a 'band score' is IELTS terminology. CELPIP reports a Level from 1 to 12 for each skill, which converts directly to a CLB level. There are no half-points or bands; a CELPIP 8 is simply CLB 8.
What CELPIP score do I need for PR?
For most Express Entry programs you need at least CLB 7 (CELPIP Level 7) in every skill to be eligible, and CLB 9 (Level 9) in every skill to earn the maximum language points. The Canadian Experience Class accepts CLB 5 for TEER 2–3 jobs.
How is the CELPIP score calculated?
Reading and Listening are auto-scored: your number of correct answers converts to a Level from 1 to 12. Writing and Speaking are rated on a rubric — four dimensions scored 1 to 12. There is no combined total; each skill is reported on its own.
Is the CELPIP score the same as CLB?
Yes, effectively. The CELPIP-General level converts one-to-one to CLB (CELPIP 7 = CLB 7), which is the scale Canadian immigration actually uses. Levels 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10 — the top of the Express Entry grid.
What is a good CELPIP score?
A 'good' score depends on your goal. CLB 7 (Level 7) in every skill makes you Express-Entry eligible; CLB 9 (Level 9) in every skill is the target that maxes your points. Because your lowest skill sets your eligibility, a balanced profile beats a lopsided one.
